A Sardinia Blue Zone tour is not a race to visit as many villages as possible, nor is it a search for a supposed longevity elixir.

It is a slow journey through the communities, mountains, food, landscapes and traditions of central-eastern Sardinia.

The most extensively studied core of Sardinia's Blue Zone includes six municipalities:

  • Arzana
  • Baunei
  • Seulo
  • Talana
  • Urzulei
  • Villagrande Strisaili

Five are located in Ogliastra, while Seulo belongs to the Barbagia di Seulo area.

These territories share a history shaped by pastoralism, agriculture, everyday movement, family relationships and life in small villages. There is no single official tourism route, so each tour should be adapted to the available time, season and interests of the traveller.

What does it mean to visit the Blue Zone?

Visiting the Blue Zone means discovering the environment in which an exceptional concentration of long-lived people was identified.

A journey may include:

  • historic village centres
  • the Gennargentu landscapes
  • the Supramonte of Urzulei and Baunei
  • pastoral routes
  • local producers
  • traditional food
  • craftsmanship
  • archaeology
  • festivals and local events
  • encounters with communities
  • the sea and the Baunei Coast

The purpose is not to search for centenarians to photograph or question. Local residents are not tourist attractions, and their privacy must always be respected.

A meaningful tour instead explores the relationships between territory, work, food, community and personal history.

Which Blue Zone villages should you visit?

It helps to know the Blue Zone villages and their differences before designing an itinerary.

Villagrande Strisaili

Villagrande Strisaili is one of the municipalities most closely connected with research into exceptional male longevity in Sardinia.

Its territory stretches between the village, forests, plateaus and the slopes of the Gennargentu.

Villagrande can be combined with Arzana during the same day, while still allowing sufficient time to experience both communities.

Arzana

Arzana stands on the slopes of the Gennargentu and is surrounded by forests, mountain landscapes and rural activities.

It is an ideal place to understand the connection between Sardinia's Blue Zone and its mountain environment.

A visit may combine the village, food or craft experiences and, when conditions allow, a guided activity in the surrounding territory.

Talana

Talana lies between the Gennargentu and the Ogliastra Supramonte.

Its landscape reflects the history of pastoral work and the movement between village, forests and mountain pastures.

Talana can be included on the same route as Urzulei, without trying to fit too many activities into one day.

Urzulei

Urzulei is a gateway to the Supramonte, an area of limestone plateaus, gorges, caves, forests and archaeological remains.

More demanding outdoor activities require suitable preparation and, where appropriate, the support of local guides.

A visit to the village can also include pastoral culture, craftsmanship and environmental education experiences.

Baunei

Baunei combines the mountain culture of the Supramonte with one of Sardinia's best-known coastlines.

The village should not be treated only as a starting point for the beaches. Its historic centre, plateaus, shepherd settlements, food and pastoral heritage are part of its Blue Zone identity.

A day can combine the village with either a mountain experience or an activity along the Baunei Coast.

Seulo

Seulo lies in the Barbagia di Seulo area, south-west of the Gennargentu.

It belongs to the restricted and most extensively studied Blue Zone core, but it is outside the administrative territory of Ogliastra and deserves a dedicated day.

It is best included as an extension of a journey lasting at least five days.

Three-day Sardinia Blue Zone itinerary

Three days are the minimum for an introduction to the Blue Zone in Ogliastra.

The programme cannot cover all six municipalities in depth, but it allows travellers to experience the five Blue Zone villages of Ogliastra through three main areas.

Day 1: Villagrande Strisaili and Arzana

The first day explores the Gennargentu side of the Blue Zone.

The programme may include:

  • village walks
  • an introduction to the history of the Blue Zone
  • a meeting with a local business
  • lunch or a tasting of local products
  • a short nature experience
  • a producer or craft workshop, depending on availability

The purpose is to understand the relationship between villages, mountains and everyday life.

Day 2: Talana and Urzulei

The second day moves towards the landscapes between the Gennargentu and the Supramonte.

In Talana, travellers can explore pastoral culture and the relationship with forests and pastures.

Around Urzulei, the landscape becomes more rugged and distinctly limestone. A guided visit may include selected natural, archaeological or cultural sites according to the season and participants' abilities.

Hiking in the Supramonte should never be improvised.

Day 3: Baunei, between mountains and sea

The third day explores Baunei and its dual identity.

The programme may include:

  • a village visit
  • a traditional food experience
  • meetings with producers or craftspeople
  • a panoramic route
  • a guided walk
  • a visit to Santa Maria Navarrese
  • an experience along the Baunei Coast

The balance between mountains and sea depends on the season and the interests of the group.

Five-day Sardinia Blue Zone tour

Five days make it possible to slow down and include Seulo.

One possible structure is:

Day 1: Villagrande Strisaili

Village visit, introduction to longevity research, local food and a first experience in the Gennargentu territory.

Day 2: Arzana

A day dedicated to the village, mountain landscapes, local producers and a guided walk or activity.

Day 3: Talana and Urzulei

A journey through pastoral culture, the Supramonte, archaeology and mountain landscapes.

Day 4: Baunei

Visit the village and choose between a mountain, food or coastal experience.

Day 5: Seulo

Travel to Barbagia di Seulo for a day dedicated to the village, territory and local traditions.

The order can be reversed depending on the location of the accommodation.

Seven-day Sardinia Blue Zone tour

Seven days allow for a more complete journey without turning every day into a long transfer.

In addition to the six core municipalities, the programme can include:

  • a full day in the Gennargentu
  • a guided Supramonte experience
  • a traditional food activity
  • a craft workshop
  • an archaeological visit
  • a day along the Baunei Coast
  • free time in the villages
  • a local event, when available

A seven-day journey may combine an inland stay with accommodation near the coast, reducing daily travel and showing the different sides of Ogliastra.

Can you walk through the Blue Zone?

Official regional hiking routes cross the territory between Villagrande Strisaili, Arzana, Talana, Urzulei, the Gennargentu and the Supramonte, in the heart of the mountains of Ogliastra.

These are multi-stage hiking routes that may involve:

  • significant elevation gain
  • long distances
  • isolated areas
  • limited phone coverage
  • careful water planning
  • changing seasonal conditions

They should not be confused with easy tourist walks between villages.

Before leaving, hikers must check:

  • the current route status
  • difficulty
  • weather forecasts
  • hours of daylight
  • water availability
  • equipment
  • physical preparation
  • whether a guide is required

Travellers who do not want a multi-stage trek can combine private transport with shorter walks and village visits.

What is the best time to visit?

The Blue Zone can be visited throughout the year, but each season offers a different experience.

Spring

Spring is particularly suitable for:

  • green landscapes
  • walking
  • rural experiences
  • village visits
  • outdoor activities

Mountain weather should still be checked carefully.

Summer

Summer allows travellers to combine inland villages with the Baunei Coast.

On hotter days, it is advisable to:

  • visit villages in the morning or late afternoon
  • avoid demanding walks during the hottest hours
  • carry sufficient water
  • choose activities suited to the temperature

Autumn

Autumn is ideal for travellers interested in:

  • food
  • wine
  • craftsmanship
  • events
  • changing landscapes
  • quieter rhythms

Days become progressively shorter, so itineraries must be planned accordingly.

Winter

Winter offers a quieter and more everyday experience of Ogliastra.

Some activities may be suspended or available only by reservation, and mountain conditions can change quickly.

How should you travel between villages?

For a multi-village tour, a car or private transfer is generally the most practical option.

Mountain roads can require more time than the distance on a map might suggest.

It is advisable to:

  • avoid scheduling too many villages in one day
  • limit unnecessary evening travel
  • check fuel before entering remote areas
  • verify road and weather conditions
  • use local operators for complex activities

An organised tour can coordinate transport, producers, visits and guides.

Where should you stay?

The best base depends on the length of the journey.

For a short tour, a central location in Ogliastra may be convenient.

For five- or seven-day itineraries, the stay can be divided between:

  • an inland village
  • accommodation near the coast
  • a second base for the Seulo extension

Staying in smaller communities allows travellers to experience local life beyond the scheduled visits and directly support local businesses.

Which experiences can be included?

A tailor-made journey may include:

  • a traditional bakery or pasta workshop
  • a meeting with a cheese producer
  • a pastoral-style lunch
  • responsible local wine tasting
  • a textile or craft workshop
  • a guided hike
  • an archaeological visit
  • an agricultural experience
  • festivals and local events
  • an activity along the Baunei Coast

Availability depends on the season, calendar and daily work of local operators. Our tours and experiences are a good starting point.

Authentic experiences are not always available every day and should be arranged in advance.

Is a longevity tour a wellness programme?

A Blue Zone tour can include movement, nature, food and social encounters, but it should not be presented as a medical treatment or a programme capable of extending life.

Sardinian longevity is a complex phenomenon that remains the subject of research: we have looked at why Sardinians live so long, while what Sardinian centenarians eat and the relationship between Cannonau and longevity deserve separate discussions.

The journey may encourage reflection on:

  • everyday movement
  • meaningful relationships
  • the social role of older people
  • connection with place
  • minimally processed food
  • the rhythm of life
  • coping and adaptation

It does not provide guarantees or universal formulas.

How to visit responsibly

Growing interest in centenarians requires respectful behaviour.

Travellers should:

  • respect residents' privacy
  • ask permission before photographing people
  • avoid entering private homes or land
  • never seek unarranged meetings with older residents or centenarians
  • buy from local producers and craftspeople
  • use qualified guides
  • leave no waste
  • respect livestock, grazing land and rural work
  • avoid miracle claims about longevity

The Blue Zone is first and foremost a living territory.
